Do you know?
During the second half of the 19th century, The Chicago River became the busiest harbor in the world! In fact, in 1871, more vessels arrived and departed the Chicago River than New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Charleston and San Francisco combined!
“Chicago at its founding, had none of the natural advantages found in great cities elsewhere around the world: built in the midst of a great level swamp, it had no fertile valleys, no great harbor, no broad rivers. Instead, its creation depended solely on the force of human will!”
Robert Herrick (Historian-1898)
